MTV UK: Iconic music channels to end with pivot to reality TV

MTV will cease broadcasting its UK music video channels on 31 December 2025, ending nearly three decades of music-focused programming.

The channels set to close include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live.

MTV’s main HD channel will remain on air but will shift entirely to reality and entertainment-style content rather than music videos. The decision follows a wider corporate restructuring by parent company Paramount Global.

The shutdown will begin in the UK and Ireland, with similar closures expected across Europe and other regions including France, Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Brazil, and Australia. Former MTV presenter Simone Angel commented on the move, reflecting on MTV’s past role as a major music platform.

As the brand phases out its linear music channels, MTV will continue through its digital presence and signature events such as the VMAs and EMAs.
