12 Years Later: Mike Posner Returns to Ibiza

More than a decade after releasing his breakout hit “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” Mike Posner has announced a sequel to the track. The new single, titled “I Went Back to Ibiza,” is scheduled to release on streaming platforms today, March 6, 2026. The song revisits the story behind the original record with a new perspective.

Posner described the track as a complete lyrical rewrite of the original song, which he wrote on his 26th birthday. The upcoming release reflects on how his life has changed since that time. The original lyrics referenced Swedish DJ Avicii and documented a difficult period in the singer’s life.

Twelve years later, Posner says the sequel represents personal growth and a shift in outlook. He has said he now looks back at the lyrics of the original song and feels proud that they no longer reflect his current life. The new track returns to the setting of Ibiza while presenting a different perspective on the experiences described in the earlier record.

“I Took a Pill in Ibiza” became one of Posner’s most widely recognised songs after a remix by Norwegian duo Seeb turned the acoustic track into a global dance hit. The remix has since accumulated more than 2.3 billion streams on Spotify and remains one of the defining crossover releases between pop and electronic music in the 2010s.

The new single “I Went Back to Ibiza” continues that story more than a decade later, offering a reflective follow-up to the original track and marking Posner’s return to the theme that helped shape one of the era’s most recognisable dance songs.
