Free Party: UK rave documentary film to premiere in March with focus on 90s scene

A new documentary exploring the UK’s rave revolution is set to premiere this month.
Titled Free Party: A Folk History, the film looks at the rise of free party culture across the UK during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It focuses on how grassroots movements shaped a generation of ravers and influenced wider electronic music culture.
The documentary features interviews with key figures involved in the scene, alongside archive footage that captures the atmosphere of illegal raves and outdoor gatherings. It documents the social and political backdrop of the time, including tensions with authorities and the introduction of legislation aimed at curbing the movement.
Central to the film is the role of sound systems and collectives that organised events outside of traditional club spaces. These groups helped build a network that enabled parties to take place across the country, often in remote locations, contributing to the spread of rave culture beyond major cities.
The premiere is scheduled to take place in March, with screenings planned for selected venues. The film aims to provide a historical record of the free party movement and its lasting impact on UK electronic music and club culture.
