Sober Music Initiative: The DJ course fostering connection in addiction recovery

A new DJ course in Bristol is supporting people recovering from addiction by helping them build connections through music.

The course is led by Milly on Air, who created the idea after noticing increased demand for sober events in the city. Alongside DJ training, the programme provides a structured and supportive environment where participants can develop new skills and share experiences.

The six-week programme will run at Sober Bar Arc which was developed by Bristol Drugs Project in response to growing interest in sober social spaces.

Participant Alex Mac said the course had been a positive addition to his recovery and encouraged him to return to making music. He described music as something that “lights up” his mood and said the sessions helped him reconnect with others, which he considers essential in overcoming addiction.

The sessions offer an alternative way to engage with music without the triggers often associated with nightlife. Volunteers from the Creative Communities group and Horizons partnership also support the initiative, helping participants build confidence and a sense of community. Organisers say the course has seen strong demand and may expand in the future.

For participants, it provides a space to explore creativity while supporting long-term recovery through connection and shared activity.
