Drumsheds Study: Electronic music linked to lower anxiety and social connection

A new study held at Drumsheds has found that electronic music and movement can help reduce anxiety while increasing feelings of social connection and wellbeing.
The research was led by Emma Marshall of Music And Movement Is Medicine alongside Professor Paul Dolan from the London School of Economics. Around 60 participants took part in guided sessions featuring breathing exercises, seated movement and free dancing to electronic music.
Researchers monitored heart rate variability and other physiological responses throughout the sessions. Results showed stress levels dropped during calmer moments, while dance phases reached levels linked to vigorous exercise.
Participants also reported increased feelings of joy, immersion and connection after taking part. The study also examined how DJs can influence emotional and physical responses through changes in tempo, pacing and energy during a set.
The findings add to growing research on how electronic music, movement and dance music affect mental wellbeing, emotions and shared experiences.
